Announcing Tours for Mobile Central

 

We’re excited to tell you about Tours, the newest Mobile Central app. As we built this plug-in to the Maps application, we put ourselves in the shoes of the end users: new and prospective students. Institutions can easily create self-guided tours accessible from the mobile device and relevant to their particular campus.

Visitors can then pop in their ear buds to start an audio tour of the campus, navigated by a student or campus historian, who will provide detail and history about the surrounding buildings. And even if someone can’t make it to campus, they can see pictures, and listen to and read about the history of important landmarks on campus. Just as if they're really on campus.

We’re not ready to declare the campus tour guide obsolete, but we do think Tours will help schools reach more people – including parents, alumni and even those who can’t make it on campus – with the ability to access a campus map anywhere they are.

Texas Tech University is the first campus to go live with Tours in their Mobile Central app, TTU Mobile. Check out their implementation by downloading their free iPhone® app from the iTunes® store. Select the Maps app and then start your tour. So even if you can’t get to Lubbock, TX, you can tour the main campus with your own personal, mobile guide.
